The role of grahas in our life

Grahas, loosely termed planets, play the most significant role in an astrology chart. In traditional Vedic astrology, there are seven prominent Grahas and two shadow planets, or Chaya Graha in Sanskrit.

Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter Venus and Saturn are the Visible Grahas, while Rahu and Ketu are the Shadow (planets) planets. Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes of the moon. In traditional Vedic Astrology or Jyotish Outer planets such as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not taken in consideration. However, in modern Jyotish the Outer planets are sometimes take in the Jyotish framework.

Coming back on the roles of Grahas (planets). Every Graha has a certain role in Jyotish, which eventually decides how that particular Graha plays part in our life.

Sun, Moon, and Mars
Starting with Sun or Surya (in Sanskrit). It is considered as the Soul of our astrological chart and it decides the Outer Quality of our life which includes Health, Confidence, Ego to name some of it. Sun is also the King of the Astrology and it also represent Father, Authority of Government. Sun rules Leo.

Moon or Chandra are the emotions of a person. Moon shows our emotional hold towards things or situations. Moon represents Mother, Home, Homeland Inner-Happiness to some of the thing. Moon rules Cancer.
Mars or Mangal shows the energy of a person. Mars shows our Energy (courage) in our life. Mars also shows our reaction in life. Some of the things represented by Mars are courage, Battlefield, Sharp Decision Making. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.

Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn
Mercury or Budha are the communication and organization placement in Astrological chart. Mercury represents Social Media, Sarcasm and Wittiness, Business to name some of it. Mercury rules Gemini or Virgo.

Jupiter or Guru is the teacher, the knowledge giver. Jupiter shows the knowledge, of optimism and wealth of a person in a chart to name a few. Jupiter rules Sagittarius or Pisces.

Venus or Shukra is the pleasure point of the chart. Venus talks about the fine things in one’s life. Venus is about the materialistic happiness of life. Venus rules Taurus and Libra.

Saturn or Shani is the difficulties or delays in the chart. Saturn represents hard work, patience or groundedness to name few. Saturn moves slowly, giving life-time lessons. Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.

Rahu and Ketu
Rahu is a Shadow planet, the north node of the moon. Rahu represents our obsession in the materialistic world. Some of the things represented by Rahu are foreign land, Insects, forest to name few.


Ketu is also a Shadow planet, the southern node of the moon. Ketu represents detachment in our chart, and some-what creates a void in one’s life.
